Undercarriage Cost Per Hour on Steel-Track Machines

Steel-track undercarriage cost is Cat’s basic factor times your ground, about 70% parts and 30% labor. The BLS parts index is up 73.4% since June 2022.

Undercarriage cost per hour formula for a Caterpillar dozer, showing basic factor multiplied by ground conditions

Rates and sources checked on October 23, 2026.

Undercarriage on Caterpillar’s example track-type tractor, in the ground conditions Cat assumes for it, costs about $7 an hour in US dollars, parts and shop labor included, when you run Cat’s own estimating method and bring its parts share up to September 2026 parts prices. The input that moves the figure most is the conditions multiplier you pick for your ground.

Undercarriage can reach as much as half of a machine’s owning and operating cost by Caterpillar’s count, and Cat sells the parts.

Cat’s formula: basic factor times your ground

The Caterpillar Performance Handbook, Edition 50 recommends figuring undercarriage separately as a wear item instead of folding it into the machine’s repair cost. Its method takes three steps:

  1. Find the basic factor for your model in the handbook’s undercarriage table.
  2. Choose a multiplier for each condition Cat lists, then add them.
  3. Multiply the basic factor by that sum to get dollars per hour.

The result splits roughly 70% parts and 30% labor, with component costs priced from published US figures in an edition printed in 2022. Two worked examples in the handbook show what the inputs look like.

Multiply across and the example tractor comes to $4.62 an hour, the D10T2 to $14.58, both at 2022 US prices. The D10T2 sits well above the D3 to D6-class dozers in the hourly rate guide.

Impact, abrasion and the Z factor

Undercarriage wear comparison for a dozer working in light grading, abrasive material, and high-impact rocky ground

A dozer pushing shot rock and one finish-grading sand put very different wear through the same track chain, and the multipliers are where that difference enters the estimate. Impact is how hard the ground strikes the undercarriage, from light grading up to hard pushing, ripping and constant contact with rock. Abrasiveness is material that wears the track down by grinding. Z covers the miscellaneous conditions the other two miss.

Choosing the three multipliers is a judgment about the ground the machine spends its hours on, made against the condition descriptions in the handbook.

On Cat’s example tractor, every 0.1 added to the sum adds $0.66 an hour at 2022 prices.

Moving that tractor from Cat’s 0.7 to the D10T2’s 0.9 adds $1.32 an hour.

Indexing Cat’s factors to today’s parts prices

Between June 2022 and September 2026, the BLS producer price index for construction-machinery parts sold separately rose from 181.207 to 314.141. That is 1.734 times the starting level, a 73.4% rise.

Edition 50 carries a 2022 date, so the working below treats June 2022 as the month its prices stand for. If the handbook copy you use dates its prices to another month, start the index there. Only the parts share is indexed, because a parts index says nothing about shop wages.

Line, Cat Example I tractor2022 US basis, USD per hourParts at the September 2026 index, USD per hour
Parts share$3.23$5.61
Labor share$1.39$1.39
Total$4.62$7.00

The index tracks every construction-machinery part sold separately, with undercarriage one group among many, so a written price on your own set outranks it. At these prices each 0.1 of multiplier on that tractor is worth about $1.00 an hour.

Is your dealer’s quote cheaper per hour?

A dealer’s written quote turns into a per-hour figure once it carries the hours the set should run in your ground: divide the first by the second. Undercarriage options move both numbers. On Cat dozers, General Duty undercarriage has the lowest upfront cost in the lineup, and Cat’s Abrasion undercarriage can last up to 50% longer than General Duty in high-abrasion, low-to-medium-impact work.

That changes the math. A set that lasts 1.5 times as long can cost up to 1.5 times as much before it costs more per hour, provided the longer life holds on your site. For the size of the whole bill on an excavator, see excavator undercarriage replacement cost by machine size.

Before you sign: Ask the dealer for written measurements of each component and the hours the new set should last on your jobs. Cat dealers monitor undercarriage performance and predict wear rates, so ask for that prediction with the price.

Hazard: Track adjusters hold grease under pressure. A 2017 UK Health and Safety Executive bulletin reports a worker killed by grease injection when the fitting detached during track tensioning, and injection injuries can occur at pressures as low as about 100 psi (7 bar). Have a dealer service department or a qualified equipment technician do any tensioning, and ask them to check the adjuster’s grease fitting before they start.

Rubber-track loaders and minis

Cat’s two worked examples are both steel-track dozers, so neither gives a rubber-track figure. For a compact track loader or a mini excavator on rubber, the build is the same division with your own numbers: the installed price of the last set over the hours it ran, read from the hour meter when the tracks went on and when they came off. The skid steer and compact track loader hourly rates show where that track cost lands in a loader’s rate.

Add the wear line to your hourly rate

Put the undercarriage figure on its own line in your rate build, beside fuel and the repair reserve. The owning versus operating cost breakdown shows where it sits among operating costs, and the equipment rates by machine guide builds the full hourly rate that line feeds.

Before your next quote, get one number from the dealer: the installed price of a new set with the hours it should last on your ground. Until you have it, use your model’s basic factor with the multipliers for your usual work, indexed as above.
